As you decide on your plans for Bonfire Night over the weekend, HNP encourage you to make responsible and safe decisions for both yourself and wildlife.
Attending fireworks displays are a great way of protecting wildlife, producing less waste and getting to see bigger and better fireworks. Displays take away the hassle of having to clear and dispose of firework waste yourself, keeping our local areas cleaner and safer for all. Events are coordinated to be fun and safe for the whole family, with first aiders on site and professionals setting off the fireworks, reducing the Catherine Wheel garden shed victims.
If you are celebrating at home this year, it is recommended that you don't build your bonfires before the evening. This ensures any little critters looking to hibernate are unable to make your bonfire their home. Leaving some of the leaf litter and logs where you find them will benefit lots of animals, from hedgehogs to toads, who rely on this material for hibernation.
When creating your bonfire or setting off fireworks, ensure water is on hand and that the area is cleared of fallen leaves. Fires should be lit away from trees and bushes areas to prevent any fires from getting out of hand. All litter from any fires and fireworks should be collected and disposed of correctly once cooled. Before planning your own celebration at home, we highly encourage you to visit the Humberside Fire and Rescues Bonfire safety page here. In the days following please dispose of any left over firework litter that you find, as the litter can land anywhere and wildlife can often mistake it for food.
However you decide to celebrate Bonfire Night we hope you have a wonderful safe time!
