The Wildlife Trusts have been hard at work putting together a framework detailing actions the UK Government can take to reduce the loss of wildlife and biodiversity within the UK and the steps needed to meet global targets. The report is a response to the lack of direction and action from previous and current governments to address the growing climate change concern and failure to meet targets agreed upon in the 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework. The report is broken down into the 23 targets as set by the original 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework. Each target has then been grouped into one of three sub-categorises, with proposed actions and recommendations for the Government in order to meet our targets.
Targets include:
The conservation of 30% of land and sea by 2030
Reduce the impact and introduction of alien species by 50%
Enhance and improve green spaces for human health and biodiversity
Improve biodiversity and sustainability in all types of farming
Enable sustainable consumer choices
The report summarises the need for clear policies and funding to ensure we can meet the targets and reverse the decline of nature and biodiversity. While this topic can be overwhelming, it's important to remember that we already have most solutions, now we just need to implement them!
By working together with government, industries, businesses and local communities we can help to protect and improve the biodiversity and habitats of the UK, and globally tackle habitat loss.
